Dining

Tasty and carefully prepared dishes are served in virtually all the many restaurants around Lefkada town. The west and east seafronts offer a gamut of choice, from cookshops serving snacks (mezedes – like the Spanish tapas) to fish tavernas and even Italian restaurants. There are enticing small tavernas in the alleys in the vicinity of the
square and the Agora, quiet, with good food, and in some you may hear the serenades (kantades), characteristic music of the Ionian Islands.

Entertainment

Most of the town’s bars are to be found along the length of the western seashore and there are others met with as you walk along the Agora market street. In the early hours, entertainment moves to the big clubs on the road to Ai Yannis. This gives late owls the chance to see the sun rise over the lagoon. Nydri and Vassiliki offer a choice of tourist hang-outs, with a sea view, and they are open for coffee all day. Finally, the old-style village of Aghios Nikitas is the venue for a ‘cult’ scene. The most popular beach bars are at Kathisma. Throughout the summer the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Lefkada organises activities and concerts, so be sure to get the programme of events.

Sports

Due to its prevailing winds and its climate, Lefkada is the ideal destination for lovers of sea sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and diving. Flying with a Super-Light plane or paragliding give the opportunity for a bird’s eye view of the land and are a fascinating experience. There are horse-back riding schools and you can train for all the sports above.

Diving

There are organized diving centres at Nikiana and Nydri, offering all diving possibilities, accompanied by trained divers. The ‘Lefkas Diving Center’ is at Nikiana (www.lefkasdivingcenter.gr, tel. 26450 72105) and the ‘Nautilus Diving Club’ at Vassiliki (www.underwater.gr, tel. 26450 31130).

Sailing

Lefkada’s seas have the reputation of being ideal for sailing and there is now an excellent state of the art marina in town that attracts many sailors. A boat gives the opportunity to visit all the island’s best beaches and some that are unique, as well as the smaller islets of the Prinkiponissia and Meganisi, Kastos and Kalamos in the environs.

Windsurfing

The island is a favourite of windsurfers. Vassiliki and Ai Yiannis beaches are renowned worldwide for the sport and are the venue for international competitions. At Vassiliki the winds in combination with the configuration of the terrain produce an unusual phenomenon, in that the force of the wind increases gradually from early noon to late afternoon, so that conditions are ideal for every level and all performances. Conditions are similar at Ai Yiannis, except that high waves roll in from the open sea so that it is suitable only for the most skilled.

Kitesurfing

Kite surfers love Mili near Lefkada town, because the weather conditions are ideal for Kite Surf and every year many events and races are being organized. The ‘Mylos beach Windsurf & Kite Center’ is famous in Europe ans is at Ai Yiannis beach.

Horse-back riding

Horse Riding schools are operating in two very organized farms in the plain of Vasiliki and in the olive grove of Lefkada in Apolpaina.

Paragliding

These are flights with a double parachute and an experienced pilot. It is a marvellous experience, ending with a spectacular landing at Kathisma beach. Yiannis Stephanitis (www.rocksandclouds.de. Tel 6945015771), also initiates in this superlative activity of parapente, in a tandem double-manned flight, as well as instructing in rock climbing.

Flying with a Super-Light plane

This is an interesting experience with the super-light planes of O.A.LE, Lefkada’s Airsports Club, a member of the Hellenic Aeronautical and Airsports Federation and the General Secretariat for Sports. The flights are absolutely safe and it’s exciting to have an
aerial view of the town, the beautiful beaches and the little islands off Lefkada’s coast. Lift-off and landing are from the club’s private runway in the Gyra area. Shopping- Gift shops

Lefkada’s main market is in town, located on Ioannou Mela Street, whose name changes after the square to G. Dörpfeld Street. You will find there – as well as in every populous area (Nydri, Vassiliki, Aghios Nikitas) – all the shops to meet your needs. It is also well worth visiting the shops selling the island’s traditional products, where you will find Englouvi lentils; Lefkada salami; pasteli (nougat) with almonds or mandolato with honey; wine, hand-made embroidery and so on.
